Anna Broerman

Anna works jointly in the Santoro and O’Malley labs, where she focuses on developing genetic engineering workflows for deep-sea marine bacteria and archaea. Marine organisms such as ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) play an essential role in oceanic nitrogen cycling and greenhouse gas production. Her work aims to enable functional genetic studies in these organisms to advance our understanding of marine ecology, biogeochemical processes, and genetic engineering of non-model organisms.

When not in the lab, Anna likes to backpack long distances, climb mountains, and surf!
